Abraham Lincoln 16th President
Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809 in Hardin County, Kentucky. He became a lawyer and a politician in Kentucky before he became President. Lincoln was not pushing for banning slavery in all states, he just wanted new states to not have slavery. However, the south did not believe in his word and believed that he would ban slavery every where. However even with the Southern hatred toward Lincoln he was still elected in 1860. He was inaugurated on March 4, 1961. As soon as Lincoln was elected 11 states seceded from the Union. Lincoln found himself stuck not having a choice but civil war. The 11 states called themselves the Confederate States of America, they elected Jefferson Davis as their president. Lincoln did not want Civil War until the Confederates fired on Fort Sumter. At the first battle of the Civil War at Bull Run the Union is defeated.
In 1863, Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation freeing all slaves. Also in 1863, Confederates are defeated at Gettysburg, and Grant wins in Vicksburg. In 1864, Lincoln makes Grant commander of Union forces, Lincoln is re-elected, Union marches through Georgia, and Confederates abandon Atlanta. in 1865, the Union army captures Richmond, General Lee surrenders which ends Civil War, and Lincoln is assassinated. He was murdered on April 15, 1865 in Fords Theater located in Washington D.C.. John Wilkes Booth secretly entered Lincoln's box and shot him in the back of the head. |
