James Monroe 5th President
James Monroe was born on April 28, 1758 in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He was one of the last Revolutionary War activists to become president. Monroe studied law under Jefferson's teachings. Also, he helped negotiate the Louisiana Purchase from France. Before becoming president, Monroe was Secretary of State and Secretary of War under James Madison. He was elected in 1817, his time as president was known as "Era of Good Feelings". However, there was a depression that formed in 1819, and in 1820 arguments began to evolve concerning slavery. His presidency lasted until 1825. He later died on July 4, 1831 in New York City, New York
